UPDATE: CNN itself is also suggesting this might be a U.S. smear campaign.
Well, it is to be expected if some David somewhere decides to stand up against the Goliath of the Military-Industrial Complex, the scumbags won't just sit there and take it.
Rape charges are a clever but typical smear move. With the mental capacity of many not being so very high, just combining the two words 'Wikileaks" with 'rape" is a victory for the establishment and an effective smear.
One Indian news website even writes: "In a suspicious development that seems to be a smear campaign against Assange, a Swedish tabloid on Saturday, Aug 21 reported that an arrest warrant has been issued for WikiLeaks founder on suspicion of rape."
Assange denies the allegations from Twitter: "the charges are without basis and their issue at this moment is deeply disturbing."
Of course they don't have to have any basis. It's an easy smear operation if the pro-war forces have connections at the National Prosecutors Office in Sweden, or elsewhere and one would think that Sweden in not immune from establishment, CIA, White House or Pentagon connections.
In a Reuters article Assange is quoted as saying "Why these accusations are popping up right now is an interesting question. I have not been contacted by police. These allegations are false"
In a BBC article Wikileaks responds: "No-one here has been contacted by Swedish police", and that it had been warned to expect "dirty tricks".
I doubt this smear campaign will have long legs or ultimately be successful (it might backfire hugely) for its originators and will mostly only convince those who are already spitting venom at Wikileaks, but we will see. I think it shows the desperation of the establishment to eliminate anyone who opposes them and anyone who does still possess some intelligence must see the allegations as suspicious. In this way I think the pro-war establishment is overreaching a bit and it could come back to simply expose the bullshit which leaks out their ears, noses and mouths. We will see what the next moves are in this chess game between the scumbags of the Military-Industrial Complex and those who care about the truth.
Here is a link to a google translation of the original newspaper article which came out with the story in Sweden. Though we are dealing with a problematic translation, it does appear at least obvious that the police are looking for many women to come forward. "Women are terrified and dare not participate. The police believe that in this case, the offender's position of power that women are afraid of."
Ha Ha Ha. Julian Assange as serial rapist! Yes, in between news conferences, proofreading documents and intellectual dicussions he goes around hunting women to rape all around Sweden.
If you believe that one, I've got a bridge to sell you.
