Holder's Cowardly Assertions

Mr. Holder, the only difference between Wikileaks and your "various news organizations" is that the latter don't make a point of being against your senseless wars and have little motivation to uncover your corruption. On both counts Wikileaks does. I suppose that makes them some kind of "terrorists" in your eyes.

Keep it up boys, this will play well with the pro-war red neck republican crowd that didn't waste one vote on your sorry asses in the election. Good strategy. I suppose a couple of cowardly yuppies will also be pleased.

From Businessweek

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said this week there is "an active, ongoing, criminal investigation" into WikiLeaks' release of the material. He said it jeopardized national security, diplomatic efforts and U.S. relationships around the world. He declined to equate WikiLeaks to traditional news organizations that enjoy certain free-speech protections.

"I think one can compare the way in which the various news organizations that have been involved in this have acted, as opposed to the way in which WikiLeaks has," Holder said. He did not elaborate on the distinction he sees between WikiLeaks and the publications.

Columbia j-school staff: WikiLeaks prosecution ‘will set a dangerous precedent’

A letter from the Columbia Journalism School to the President:

From Poynter

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20500

Attorney General Eric Holder
U.S. Department of Justice
950 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20530-0001

December 13, 2010

Dear Mr. President and General Holder:

As faculty members and officers of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, we are concerned by recent reports that the Department of Justice is considering criminal charges against Julian Assange or others associated with Wikileaks.

Journalists have a responsibility to exercise careful news judgment when classified documents are involved, including assessing whether a document is legitimately confidential and whether there may be harm from its publication.

But while we hold varying opinions of Wikileaks’ methods and decisions, we all believe that in publishing diplomatic cables Wikileaks is engaging in journalistic activity protected by the First Amendment. Any prosecution of Wikileaks’ staff for receiving, possessing or publishing classified materials will set a dangerous precedent for reporters in any publication or medium, potentially chilling investigative journalism and other First Amendment-protected activity.

As a historical matter, government overreaction to publication of leaked material in the press has always been more damaging to American democracy than the leaks themselves.

The U.S. and the First Amendment continue to set a world standard for freedom of the press, encouraging journalists in many nations to take significant risks on behalf of transparency. Prosecution in the Wikileaks case would greatly damage American standing in free-press debates worldwide and would dishearten those journalists looking to this nation for inspiration.

We urge you to pursue a course of prudent restraint in the Wikileaks matter.
Please note this letter reflects our individual views, not a position of Columbia University or the Journalism School.

Respectfully,

Wilkie scathing of PM's response to WikiLeaks

Former whistleblower and independent MP Andrew Wilkie has issued a scathing attack against the Prime Minister's handling of the WikiLeaks affair.

Mr Wilkie says Julia Gillard is showing contempt for the rule of law by failing to give Australian WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange the presumption of innocence.

Mr Assange was arrested by British police on Tuesday in response to a Swedish warrant on alleged sex crimes and faces possible extradition.

"I believe the Prime Minister is showing a contempt for the rule of law - the way she has ruled out the presumption of innocence and instead there seems to be a presumption of guilt when it comes to Mr Assange," Mr Wilkie said.

"That's not how we do things in Australia and she should know better.

"And as a lawyer, she should know she's potentially compromised any legal proceedings that might be brought against Mr Assange if in fact he makes it to the US.

"I believe also she's shown a complete contempt for Australia's sovereignty - the way she has defaulted to the interests of the US, instinctively it seems, rather than the interests of an Australian citizen."

Mr Wilkie says he is disgusted by Ms Gillard's response and her disregard for free speech.

Australian Government Makes Up Some Laws To Kill Free Speech And Protect Their Putrid Asses

Now you can see what scum these people really are. It's all out in the open.

From news.com.au

THE Federal Government has elaborated on its position on WikiLeaks, saying both the initial leaking of classified documents and their subsequent distribution by the controversial website is likely to be illegal.
"The unauthorised obtaining of the information may well be an offence,'' Attorney-General Robert McClelland said today.

"The distribution of that information I would think would have a solid argument, again without knowing the United States law, would be an offence.

"Certainly to release that sort of information by an officer of the commonwealth, if it were Australian material, would in my view certainly involve criminality.''

Mr McClelland was speaking in Sydney after launching a new guide for businesses entitled The Insider Threat to Business - A Personnel Security Handbook.

"It is clearly topical,'' Mr McClelland said.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard was on Monday unable to name any Australian laws broken by WikiLeaks or its founder Julian Assange, but claimed the ``foundation stone of it is an illegal act''.

There has been anger throughout the community that the Australian Government appeared to be pre-judging Mr Assange and the activities of WikiLeaks without any charge or trial.

Assange: "The attacks against us by the US point to a great hope, speech powerful enough to break the fiscal blockade."

From The Guardian.

Julian Assange:
The west has fiscalised its basic power relationships through a web of contracts, loans, shareholdings, bank holdings and so on. In such an environment it is easy for speech to be "free" because a change in political will rarely leads to any change in these basic instruments. Western speech, as something that rarely has any effect on power, is, like badgers and birds, free. In states like China, there is pervasive censorship, because speech still has power and power is scared of it. We should always look at censorship as an economic signal that reveals the potential power of speech in that jurisdiction. The attacks against us by the US point to a great hope, speech powerful enough to break the fiscal blockade.

Google Shuts Down Alex Jones Youtube Channel, Cites Wikileaks Collateral Murder Video As Reason

From Prison Planet.

...Google-owned You Tube yesterday moved to freeze the popular Alex Jones Channel, which has well over 100,000 subscribers and has had over 75 million views. You Tube made a spurious claim that the channel had violated “community guidelines” by posting a segment from the infamous Wikileaks Apache footage, when the footage is in fact posted in greater length on hundreds of other You Tube channels, including Al Jazeera, Russia Today and CBS News.
