A federal board allowed to monitor testing of a key piece of Gulf oil spill evidence — the blowout preventer — demanded Thursday that the analysis stop, saying representatives of the companies that made and maintained the 300-ton device have been getting preferential and sometimes hands-on access to it...


“Given the well-publicized history of improper relationships between the former Minerals Management Service and members of the oil industry, one would have expected that extraordinary care would be taken to conduct the BOP testing above reproach,” safety board chairperson Rafael Moure-Eraso said in the letter. “One would have expected an independent, second set of eyes like the CSB to be welcomed. Regrettably this has not been the case.”
The MMS was renamed the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement after two scathing reports by a federal inspector general. The reports highlighted drug use and sex among agency employees and oil and gas industry executives, and said drilling regulators accepted gifts and trips from oil and gas companies and even negotiated to go work for the industry while overseeing it.

Alarms Disabled On Deepwater Horizon One Year Before Explosion

July 23 (Bloomberg) -- General alarms on Transocean Ltd.’s Deepwater Horizon drilling rig had been disabled for a year before it exploded and sank in the Gulf of Mexico, causing the biggest U.S. oil spill in history.

The alarms would’ve warned all crew members of a fire or a large amount of explosive gas and were connected to an emergency shutdown system, Mike Williams, chief electronics technician for Geneva-based Transocean, said at a U.S. Coast Guard and Interior Department joint investigation hearing today in Kenner, Louisiana.

Supervisors told him when he discovered the issue that “they didn’t want people woken up at 3 a.m. to false alarms,” Williams said...

Obama Administration Knew About Deepwater Horizon 35,000 Feet Well Bore

President Obama and Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar, Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, and Defense Secretary Robert Gates were informed that BP would drill an unprecedented 35,000 feet well bore at the Macondo site off the coast of Louisiana. In September 2009, the Deepwater Horizon successfully sunk a well bore at a depth of 35,055 below sea level at the Tiber Prospect in the Keathley Canyon block 102 in the Gulf of Mexico, southeast of Houston.

During the September drilling operations, the Deepwater Horizon drill penetrated a massive undersea oil deposit but BP's priorities changed when the Macondo site in the Mississippi Canyon off the coast of Louisiana was found to contain some 3-4 billion barrels of oil in an underground cavern estimated to be about the size of Mount Everest. It was as a result of another 35,000 feet well bore sank by the Deepwater Horizon at the Macondo site that the catastrophic explosion occurred on April 20.

According to the Wayne Madsen Report (WMR) sources within the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Pentagon and Interior and Energy Departments told the Obama Administration that the newly-discovered estimated 3-4 billion barrels of oil in the Gulf of Mexico would cover America's oil needs for up to eight months if there was a military attack on Iran that resulted in the bottling up of the Strait of Hormuz to oil tanker traffic, resulting in a cut-off of oil to the United States from the Persian Gulf.

Obama, Salazar, Chu, and Gates green-lighted the risky Macondo drilling operation from the outset, according to WMR's government sources.

WMR learned that BP was able to have several safety checks waved because of the high-level interest by the White House and Pentagon in tapping the Gulf of Mexico bonanza find in order to plan a military attack on Iran without having to be concerned about an oil and natural gas shortage from the Persian Gulf after an outbreak of hostilities with Iran.

BP still has an ongoing operation to drill down to 40,000 feet below sea level at the Liberty field off the north coast of Alaska.

However, as a whistleblower previously told 60 Minutes, there was an accident at the rig a month or more prior to the April 20th explosion...

But the trouble was just beginning: when drilling resumed, Williams says there was an accident on the rig that has not been reported before. He says, four weeks before the explosion, the rig's most vital piece of safety equipment was damaged....

Does a company that both builds oil rigs and cleans up oil spills have any motivation to prevent oil rig disasters?

That's the question some people in business and politics are asking themselves after Halliburton's purchase of an oil clean-up company 10 days before the Deepwater Horizon explosion that killed 11 workers and launched the worst oil spill in US history.

Some observers see a conspiracy in the actions of the company once headed by Dick Cheney. Halliburton, which built the cement casing for the Deepwater Horizon's drill, announced its purchase of Houston-based oilfield services company Boots and Coots for $240 million on April 9, just 11 days before the Deepwater Horizon explosion.

According to a report at the Christian Science Monitor Friday, Boots and Coots is now under contract with BP to help with the oil spill...

I've got my own suspicions along these lines. Sometimes I have the feeling I should take Obama and Biden as nothing more then con men at this point. They fix zero, they just pretend to. Every solution Obama finds on closer examination turns out to be nothing more then a giveaway to corporations disguised as some kind of well-intentioned liberalism. So we have well-intentioned liberal bailouts of Wall Street. We have well-intentioned liberal wars of aggression in Central Asia. We have well-intentioned liberal torture and surveillance. We have well-intentioned liberal health insurance corporation bailouts. We have well-intentioned liberal appeasement of Israeli aggression. We might soon have a well-intentioned liberal attack on Iran.

The BP attempts to close the well paraded everyday on CNN seem nothing more then a charade for the low brainpower folks. Which generates the feeling, if they really just wanted to close the well, they would. The problem is, exploding the well would stop it, but it would also seal up the well from ever being used again, according to the article linked above.

Maybe Obama is just a corporate android who does absolutely what his higher-ups tell him? Maybe they have told him, "this well needs to stay open."

I wouldn't be surprised. His talk of going to bed every night frustrated over the disaster and his daughter theatrically asking him if he closed the well, sounds like a lot of PR baloney to me. Same old show. Everything seems like a scripted lie today. Maybe it is.

Investigators delving into the possible cause of the massive gulf oil spill are focusing on the role of Houston-based Halliburton Co., the giant energy services company, which was responsible for cementing the drill into place below the water. The company acknowledged Friday that it had completed the final cementing of the oil well and pipe just 20 hours before the blowout last week.
